英文文书目前的一个趋势是，在描写男女都从事的工作、职业、事物时，不再只使用单性别词汇进行指代，要兼顾性别。对于这个问题究竟去到什么程度为适度，各人有不同见解。对于写作，这个问题比较简单。如果阅卷老师看到写作中考虑到了这方面，只可能是加分项，不会减分。

比如，mankind 是一个十分常用的词。在古英语传统里，man 常常用来指代 人／人类／人这一物种，似乎忽略了女性／女人。现在比较流行的是在使用 mankind 的场合采用：humanity 或 human race 等词。

又如，the man in the street (意即 街上随便一个人，也即社会中普通一员)，可以用 the average person 或 the average citizen 代替。

像 Each student must carry his calculator with him. 这样的句子，在男校里面可以继续使用，在男女共校里可以有多种表达方式：

All students musy carry their calculators with them. 

Each student must carry his or her calculator with him / her. 

You must carry your calculator with you.

很多历史上形成的性别偏颇的称谓、职业用词现在也在改变：

chairman 主席：		chairperson
policeman 警员：		police officer
salesman 销售人员：	sales rep (representative), sales attendant
sportsman 运动员：	athlete, player
actress:			actor

等等不一而足。
